A friend of mine in Europe has spearheaded a committee to establish a memorial to mark the site of the liberation commemorating the liberators and the victims of the Holocaust who were freed on April 13, 1945. The mission is three-fold:
- Mission 1 – acquire permission to place a Monument/Marker, create a Foundation and a Website – Accomplished.
- Mission 2 – to ask for donations, acquire a Monument/Marker and find a suitable text.
- Mission 3 – to have the text approved by the Mayor and to have the unveiling on 13 April 2018.
It’s my understanding that one of the primary goals is as stated by survivor Gina Rappaport, at the close of her short narrative of her trials at the hands of the Germans, and her feeling upon liberation, written in 1945 as she recuperated at Hillersleben:
“I shall never forget what I owe to the American Army.”
